In Medio kicks off our third season with two examples of vocal music that were composed in secret or contain hidden messages. We pay tribute to the 400th anniversary of the death of English Renaissance master William Byrd with a performance of his iconic Mass for Five Voices. Alongside Byrd’s iconic composition, In Medio will present a collection of African American spirituals, which all contain coded language designed to lead enslaved people to freedom.
